Colorado Legacy Schools is a statewide math-science initiative that will significantly increase the number and diversity of students enrolling in and passing math, science and English advanced placement (AP) exams across Colorado. The $250,000 grant will provide teacher incentives, student exam fees and student prep sessions to about 2,000 students and 65 teachers across Colorado.

In all, the Colorado Legacy Schools initiative seeks to serve more than 20,625 students, 600 AP teachers, 75 Pre-AP teachers and 75 schools statewide over the next five years. The initiative is focused on high-poverty, high-minority high schools and their feeder middle schools and aims to impact statewide policy with respect to the preparation of all students for college and careers in math and science.

The seven schools participating in the 2010-2011 school year are:

* Abraham Lincoln High School, Denver Public Schools
* Centennial High School, Pueblo City Schools
* Columbine High School, Jeffco Public Schools
* Fruita Monument High School, Mesa County Valley School District 51
* Grand Junction High School, Mesa County Valley School District 51
* James Irwin Charter High School, Harrison School District 2
* Northglenn High School, Adams 12 Five Star Schools

These schools increased enrollment in their math, science and English AP programs by about 80 percent for the 2010-11 school year; including increases in one school by as much as 211 percent. Additionally, 41 teachers attended math, science and English AP and Pre-AP trainings during summer 2010.

Full implementation, future scaling and long-term sustainability of Colorado Legacy Schools are dependent on Pepsi Refresh and other funds. The Colorado Legacy Foundation is working with the National Math and Science Initiative and state and national partners to identify funding to support the seven Legacy Schools in the short-term and ensure statewide scaling of the program in the long-term.
